Whats going on in Social Media?

I recently signed up for a site called www.Socialbakers.com and they send out a weekly newsletter that lets you know whats going on across all social media. Sadly, I only have a 2 week trial, and after that you have to pay for a subscription, but take a look at the kind of data they send you, its pretty sweet. Every company with a digital marketing department would need to be in tune with something like this (seen Below).

Here are some highlights from the Social bakers Youtube:

I feel like this is something that every company should be a part of. Why? Its important that businesses focus on their core competency while leaving this analysis other companies that will do it well. When you see the pricing for this application its cheap when you think about it. An account is as low as 75$ a month, that is only $900 a year. The time savings this application gives you is worth well more then that. It probably would take a few analysts to even put together this level of data that would cost over $100K. Having a program like this gives you more time to focus on how your company will react to the market, and your competitors (See the pricing below). I'm even thinking about reaching out to them to see if they have a discounted account for people in school, I know I would like to play around with it more.

Falling into themselves - GAP Inc.

GAP Inc. stock is down over 10% after they released news they missed guidance for April. GAP already had forecasted sales to be poor, so the market didn’t take this news lightly (Forcast: GAP +0.4%, Old Navy -0.1% & Banana -5.9%(Fortune.com)). GAP’s comparable sales actually fell 4% last month,  Old Navy dropped 10% and Banana Republic by 7% (Fortune.com). This is the company’s 13th straight month of declines, and the Stock is now 50% of its 52 week high.

The company has been falling apart, and has been having trouble holding its talent. In the last year and a half, they have lost CEO’s for all three of their brands (GAP, Old Navy and BR (Fortune.com)). The company reports earnings May 19th, and they alluded that they would be announcing store closings in Europe and Asia (Fortune.com).  After last year’s plan of announcing 175 store closures in North America its clear the Company is significantly reducing its brick and mortar footprint (Fortune.com).

The digital world we live in is adding pressure to a lot of retailers, and GAP is a prime example of this.  “Our industry is evolving and we must transform at a faster pace, while focusing our energy on what matters most to our customers,” said Art Peck, chief executive officer, Gap Inc. “We are committed to better positioning the business to recapture market share in North America and to capitalizing on strategic international regions where there is a strong runway for growth.” (www.gapinc.com).

It will be interesting to see how they use social media to help them, navigate these waters. At a glance I noticed, last month they ran campaign on YouTube was with a big Influencer Ellen DeGeneres. However, Ellen was not enough to help boost sales for GAP this April.

GAP has a large online presence, and even through they are active with social media marketing, sometimes that isn't enough if the economy isn't supporting you... Bloomberg suggests that GAP and other retailers are struggling to see growth due to the US's lack of Income growth over the past few years (Video: Bloomberg).

GE - A cool place to work

I worked for GE for 6 years and sadly never had a chance to work in any of these departments. In the past few years GE has gone through a lot of changes, they have been getting out of their more risky GE Capital businesses (which revolve around the financial world) and have focused more on the GE Industrial businesses. They did this because after the recession, GE Capital crushed GE's stock with losses and they felt it was in the best interest of shareholders to remove this volatility.

GE Capital Businesses - High risk, high reward
GE Industrial Businesses - Lower risk, easier to forecast growth

Now that GE is focusing on Industrial businesses, they need to attract top talent, so they can keep evolving to further grow the company. “We act. We learn. We get better. We insist on being more than we are today. We are moving forward to become the Digital Industrial. Join us as we create the next wave of growth.” Jeff Immelt, 2015 CEO Letter.

Some other interesting things to think about with GE:

·         They have been listed on the Dow Jones Index for 120 years and paid a quarterly dividend for 100+ years (www.GE.com)
·         One of original 12 companies to debut on the Dow Jones back on May 26, 1896 (finance.yahoo)
·         The GE conglomerate consists of eight subsidiaries in different industries
o    GE Aviation, GE Capital, GE Global Research, GE Healthcare, GE Home & Business Solutions, GE Oil & Gas, GE Power & Water, and GE Transportation (finance.yahoo)
·         Has been a Fortune 500 company for 21 years (finance.yahoo)

What I find amazing about GE is the fact they have been able to adapt their business for over 120 years. Now you see them taking to social media like they own it. Hopefully they are a company that is around for another 100+ years. All I know is in my mind, these commercials crush it... What do you think?

'A snowballs chance in hell'

'Like talking to a wall'

'Catching lightning in a bottle'

Some other sites that talk about the campaign:

Home Depots - Nick Offerman, H. Jon Benjamin, and Sarah Baker - Boom

Lowe's introduced the idea of robotic sales assistance and John Oliver suggested a strong Home Depot rebuttal commercial.

  • This needed to be cleared with Home Depot to use their marks right?
  • I'm wondering if they paid HBO to defuse the situation with Humor?

If you like to laugh you are going to love this:

First Digital Marketing Job

I've never owned or worked at a bar, but can tell from watching a lot of Bar Rescue its not easy. Its a very interesting business, and with social media now in the mix there is more for Bar owners to worry about. Yelp, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Seamless, 4square, and open table (The list goes on) where is a bar supposed to focus its time and how do they stay relevant to people?

After years of living in the area I have become friendly with the owner of Bradford's here in Stamford. I looked at his website and social media online and thought it would be a great experience if I offered my help (Free of charge). I figured helping him with this problem would be mutually beneficial for both of us. I need some real world experience, and he needs some help with everything online.

Since everyone here loves marketing, I figured I would turn to all of you for help.

The first thing I think I need to change is the website: Bradford's Website (done on word press)
  • It just looks cheap - the formats are not standard throughout the site
  • Not customized for Bradfords - the site uses stock photos
  • No links to their social media
  • Weak social media posts
I've never used word press, and am thinking about switching the website to a Wix or Weebly based on the reviews I've been reading online, they seem to be more "user friendly". The goal is to create a site that is clean and easy to use. If it could look anything close to what Brother Jimmy's site looks like it would be a great success. BroJ's

Once the website looks legit, its going to be time to come up content to post on social media

Questions for everyone (answer one, or them all, anything helps)
  1. Has anyone used those web design websites? If so which do you like?
  2. Do you ever look at websites for bars? If so. what things do you like to see in a site ?
  3. What kinds of posts would interest you from a bar on social media?
